The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the new prescription weight loss medication orlistat in patients with obesity. Methods
An open label, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was performed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of orlistat in patients with obesity who did not have a previous prescription for the prescription. Patients with a BMI of 30 kg/m2, body mass index (BMI) of 27 or more, were randomly assigned to receive either 120 mg or the new prescription orlistat (n=814) for a period of one year. The primary end point was the weight change from baseline, measured by the primary end point BMI, as well as the change in the HbA1c level and total cholesterol levels from baseline. There were significantly fewer weight gain for the orlistat group than the placebo group. The number of participants who lost more than 5% of their body weight was not significantly different in the two groups.
Overall, there were fewer patients in the orlistat group than in the placebo group (17.0% versus 13.6%, respectively;P=0.03). A significant increase in the HbA1c level was observed in the orlistat group, but no change in the weight loss was observed in the placebo group.
In conclusion, this study showed that the new prescription orlistat reduced the weight change from baseline from baseline (6.9% to 5.6% at 1 year), while no change in the weight loss was observed in the placebo group.
The new prescription orlistat reduced the weight change from baseline from baseline, but no change in the weight loss was observed in the placebo group. These data suggest that this new prescription orlistat is safe and effective in patients with obesity, and that it is a suitable option for patients who do not have a previous prescription for the prescription.
